Midnight sannmich and some dark chocolate covered blueberries… Oh yes. So good. *drool*
I was ever so innocently procrastinating (evil essay) *wipes chocolate from face* when I suddenly came across this thing called BrightOcular. Turns out this is a surgical procedure that makes use of coloured lens implants to permanently change the colour of your eyes. It was originally made for people with albinism and iris dysfunctionalities but of course, if humans got the option to be more “beautiful” they’ll most likely take it (of course… ahh greedy little things we are, no?)
Here's a picture of a woman who had the procedure done and went from dark brown to light blue. (yes I went through the effort of getting screen shots for you guys, your welcome.)
P.S. she looks kinda creepy...
So a part of me got excited reading about this while another part of me found it pretty vain. I got excited because of the advancements of science! Woot! It seems like anything humans ever desire can be attained through invention… which excites me (ahh the human mind… tis a creative thang). But on the other hand it all seems overwhelmingly disturbing. Don’t get me wrong, I am not completely against cosmetic surgeries. But really? The eyes? Out of all things, the eyes?!
Like most of the world I feel like people should be comfortable with who they are and how they look. But I also feel like people have the right to look how they want. Let’s say for example a girl is uncomfortable with her big nose (say its huge… like massive… like ginormous) and is constantly self-conscious about it and in turn it affects her self-esteem, to her I say… get the damn thing fixed! But for someone who might want…. Hmm let’s say a boob job done… I’m thinkin… a C to a DD. I’m sorry but should that really be a priority? (Gentlemen, your opinions shall be held as bias and therefore not considered *cough*, apologies). I mean I understand someone who may be uncomfortable with their attractiveness and might want to get implants but common… I think we all know some people overdue it.
So why do some of these people overdue it? It (quite obviously has to do with self-confidence). Like in my other blog post, I mentioned people easily confusing external confidence with internal confidence. These people who get addicted to cosmetic surgeries and end up looking like Chuckie’s bride have seriously got a problem. Take for example, Joan Rivers… holly Jesus the woman gives me nightmares. Clearly she doesn’t want to age. But no one does… maybe people need to stop resisting and just… accept? (They may just find a sense of peace)
I completely understand the appeal that light eyes have. They can be very beautiful. Just look at the picture below (which is a scene from a British show called Skins, damn addictive). Or the one under that. I am sure you’ve seen that picture somewhere, it a very famous picture that was taken by a photographer for the national geographic. Sharbat Gula is the name of that girl who was living as a refugee in Pakistan when the photo was taken. She was 12 years old then and at the time the photo was taken no one knew her name. The picture was equated with the Mona Lisa and gained recognition as the most recognized photograph in National Geographic history. So what is it about that picture that got it so famous? Okay so it’s a girl looking at the camera… big woop right? It’s her eyes! They seem to have capture people for so many years. She has now become a “symbol of the Afghan conflict and refugee situation worldwide”. They say “eyes are the windows to the soul” and I personally find it quite interesting that the world had fallen in love with her eyes, the same eyes that had seen so much! Her parents had died in the Soviet Union’s bombing of Afghanistan and she was fleeing with her siblings and grandmother to a refugee camp.
Okay so yeah I know your probably sitting there like.. okay that’s all dandy but dude… she’s got sea green eyes who wouldn’t love them? But I guess the point I was making is that eyes really do seem like the windows to the soul, so maybe they shouldn’t be changed. Also, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and what you may find average might be beautiful to another. I’m pretty sure that Sharbat Gula didn’t care much for her eye colour, girl had bigger fish to fry, but those eyes captivated North America, and she didn’t even know it. I guess what I’m saying is that we give importance to light eyes because of the culture we’re in, that shouldn’t devalue the beauty of the browns… because they are still their own window.. :3
The whole idea about changing your eye colour is defiantly an interesting one. Gets me simultaneously excited and disturbed… O_o. Perhaps this is the beginning of even larger human advancements in the cosmetic fields. But the only thing is… people are so easily confused and lead astray… maybe we have been placing too much emphasis on looks and the option of changing things can and will be taken out of hand and exploited. Maybe one day people might be able to completely reinvent themselves. Not sure if that’s a good or bad thing… maybe it sounds weird because we aren’t used to it. Change is always odd in the beginning but eventually people tend to settle in. But this new idea of the future confuses me, I’m not sure if these changes are good or bad. Maybe they don’t have to be either. I just hope people don’t lose focus on the shiz that really matters…
Till next time!... Cheerioss!
